The Penny Dainties were a three-piece jazz/swing vocal group, formed on New Year's Day in 1986 by friends Alison Burns, Tricia Grimes, and Jane Grimes, the group had strong personal roots in Dundee. Their music took inspiration from the close-harmony vocal styles of 1930s and 40s American groups like the Dinning Sisters and the Andrew Sisters.
As the group performed heavily around the 1980s through the early 2000s, specific photographs dedicated exclusively to them are scarce online, though they were officially inducted into the Dundee Music Hall of Fame. They were a mainstay of the booming Dundee jazz scene in the late 1980s alongside bands like Havana Swing and Zero DB. They traveled to New York on a Scottish Arts Council grant to study at the Manhattan School of Music, released a CD titled Unwrapped, and even performed at events like the Timex workers' benefit concerts. Vintage recordings of them performing tracks like "Say Si Si" and "Tennessee Wig Walk" can still be found on Youtube.
The Live Recordings were made in 1993 and feature Chris Marra on Guitar and Calum MacKenzie on Double Bass.
'Earlier, on the city's northern reaches, a small but appreciative audience smiled infectiously as singing trio The Penny Dainties charmed Whitfield. Backed by a trim, swinging quartet featuring former Danny Wilson bassist Ged Grimes and guitarist Martin Taylor's son James on drums, Alison, Tricia, and Jane breezed through a selection of old but fresh-sounding favourites including Say Si Si and Tico Tock. Tight harmonies and an irresistible verve are the Dainties' stock in trade, with stylish guitar licks from Christopher Marra adding an extra splash of class to an already classy act.' - Glasgow Herald 1999.
